According to Hajar ibn Qays, Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for Fatima’s hand in marriage. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him that she is his on the condition that he treats her well. Reported by al-Tabarani and authenticated by Shaykh al-Albani in Silsilah al-Sahihah, no. 166.
