According to Jabir ibn Abdillah (may Allah be pleased with him and his father), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said that whatever a person spends on himself, his children, his wife, his family, and his relatives counts as charity for him. (Reported by al-Tabarani and authenticated by Shaykh al-Albani in Sahih al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib, no. 1960)
