The Khaybar Expedition – Q5
According to ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘Awf (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) accepted gifts but did not eat from charity. A Jewish woman from Khaybar (1) offered a roasted sheep that she had poisoned. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ate from it, and the people ate from it. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Lift your hands, for it has informed me that it is poisoned (2).” Bishr ibn al-Bara’ ibn Ma‘rur al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) died, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent someone to ask the Jewish woman: “What prompted you to do what you did?” She said: “If you are a prophet, then what I did would not harm you; but if you are a king, then I would have freed the people from you.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that she be killed. Later, during the illness that led to his death, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “I continue to feel pain from what I ate at Khaybar; it is now cutting my aorta.” Reported by Abu Dawud in his Sunan no. 4512 and authenticated by Shaykh al-Albani in his verification of Sunan Abi Dawud.
